This new chapter in the Surrey estate’s landscape builds upon an already cherished collaboration. Set within a series of natural level changes, the design focuses on requalifying a portion of the grounds to create a more intimate, contemporary garden with spaces for gathering, contemplation, and connection.
The stepped landscape, defined by retaining walls of beautifully weathered stone, offered an architectural framework that we enhanced through a bold yet harmonious planting scheme. A fire pit terrace forms the centrepiece - a warm, inviting space that anchors the garden and encourages slow evenings outdoors.
The planting palette is one of texture, softness, and quiet drama. Grasses, Euphorbia, Stachys, and other naturalistic perennials weave through the terraces, catching the light and offering movement throughout the seasons. Multi-stem birches with exfoliating bark provide sculptural presence and an elegant vertical rhythm, acting as both focal points and soft screens within the garden.
Each element was chosen to respond to the landscape’s form and the estate’s wider character, while giving this specific area a distinct identity. The resulting garden feels rooted in its surroundings yet refreshingly contemporary - a generous, tactile space that complements the existing woodland and ornamental areas without replicating them.
Designed with the same spirit of collaboration and trust as the larger estate project, this garden embodies the evolution of a landscape and of a client–designer relationship that values sensitivity, detail, and a shared vision.
