Located within an exclusive private estate, this Surrey property pairs architectural grandeur with expansive grounds structured around terraces, woodland, and generous open spaces. The commission focused on requalifying the existing landscape through a complete rethinking of the planting - redefining every area across the estate, from romantic, contemplative planting to large-scale woodland restoration.
Much of the original hard landscape remained in place, but the planting strategy was entirely rebuilt. In the extensive woodland areas, beneath impressive mature pines, overgrown vegetation was selectively cleared to reveal structure, light, and movement. A new botanical rhythm was introduced: species chosen for texture, seasonality, and ecological sensitivity, ensuring the landscape feels natural and rooted in its context.
In contrast, the more intimate zones - terraces, resting spots, and south-facing gardens - were redesigned with planting that invites contemplation, softness, and seasonal nuance. Romantic layers of perennials and pale foliage illuminate the south white garden, while intermediate terraces now transition gently between levels through planting that drapes, softens, and guides.
Across the site, the intention was always to intervene respectfully - preserving what worked, rescuing what could thrive, and bringing coherence where the landscape felt fragmented.
The driveway and entrance sequence were also requalified to restore a sense of arrival that matches the architecture’s stature. Movement through the garden now feels intentional, layered, and generous, with planting enriching every step of the journey.
The clients described the process as creative, thoughtful, adaptable, highlighting the strong rapport across design, construction, and maintenance teams - a collaboration where design intent and execution aligned seamlessly.
